Major changes to Moves-in-the-Field Tests take effect on September 2, 2010. Until that date, the current moves in the field rules will remain in effect. The video examples linked below were prepared by US Figure Skating. They are intended to be educational and do not necessarily represent the passing standard. If you are using Firefox Internet Browser and have trouble opening the Videos, please switch to Microsoft Internet Browser. Moves with Blue Font have been revised. Moves with Green Font are new. Pre-Preliminary Moves-in-the-Field Test (PPM) No Change to Current Test
Preliminary Moves-in-the-Field Test (PM)
Note 1: The forward and backward crossover move has been condensed. The skater performs two circles forward in a figure eight pattern, does an open mohawk and continues with two circles in a backward figure eight. This cuts the time in half for the previous two moves. Note 2: Note 2: In response to much many comments from coaches and skaters for moves based on figures, we're adding a forward figure eight pattern that combines both the basic forward outside and forward inside figure eights. This move lays an early foundation for the skater to understand proper use of edge and body control on the forward edges. Note 3: The alternating backward crossovers to backward outside edges is being cut to one length of the ice.
Pre-Juvenile Moves-in-the-Field Test (PJM)
Note 1: The first two moves of the current test have been combined into one shorter, more efficient move. The skater performs forward stroking down one side of the rink and the first end, does a mohawk and continues with the backward stroking and crossover pattern for the other side. This cuts the time in half to perform the moves. Note 2: A new move based on the basic backward outside and backward inside circle eights has been added to the pre-juvenile test. This move will continue the progression of development of the skater learning proper use of edge and body control this time on the backward edges. Note 3: The five-step mohawk has also been condensed to just one pass down the rink.
Juvenile Moves-in-the-Field Test (JM)
See Note 1: See Note 1: The two forward and backward power circles from the intermediate test have been moved to the juvenile level. The addition of these moves at this level adds some needed basic power skating moves. See Note 2: The eight-step mohawk has been shortened to a continuous figure-eight pattern. The skater performs two eight-step sequences in one direction and continues to the second circle for two more sequences in the other direction.
Intermediate Moves-in-the-Field Test (IM)
The forward and backward power circles have been moved to the juvenile test. The skater already performed backward power threes on the juvenile test, so this move is being deleted. Note 1: See Note 1: A basic forward twizzle pattern has been added. The move may be skated across the hockey lines as shown on the diagram or along the long axis of the rink. Note 2: The current spiral moves in both the novice and senior tests only use forward inside and backward outside spirals. In this revised move the first and last spirals have been changed to a forward outside and backward inside so that all eight edges are used in the new move.
Novice Moves-in-the-Field Test (NM)
Note 1: See Note 1: The very lengthy inside three-turn and rocker/choctaw moves on the current test involve four laps around the ice surface. The moves have been condensed (both are demonstrations of a skater's quickness) into one move which takes just one pass down the ice. It can save three to five minutes over a test, which is one of the longest moves tests in the structure. The flat bracket-three-bracket move is being deleted. Note 2: See Note 2: A pattern of backward outside and backward inside twizzles has been added to continue the progression from the forward twizzles in the intermediate moves test. The skater has freedom of arm and leg positions to demonstrate his or her own individual style with these moves. Note 3: Forward outside and inside loops have been added to the novice test.
Junior Moves-in-the-Field Test (JRM)
The skater has already demonstrated power circle patterns at the juvenile (formerly intermediate) level, and it was determined there was not a need to reevaluate this skill at the junior level. Note 1: Backward loops are being introduced in the junior test with a move that gives the skater the feeling of backward change loops from figures and teaches great body and edge control at a point in the testing structure when the skater can technically perform this skill. Note 2: A new straight line step has been added. This move uses the turns that the skater has learned on this and previous tests in a simple pattern that demonstrates the skater's ability to perform continuous steps and turns with control and flow. This move is a good introduction to the new circular step on the senior test. Senior Moves-in-the-Field Test (SRM)
See Note 1: The current spiral sequence has been modified to add an outside forward spiral. The end of the sequence is altered slightly; the whole first section up to the triple three is unchanged. See Note 2: A new serpentine step has been created that uses portions of the current quick edge step and adds counters, twizzles and loops that are not in the current move. The emphasis of this move is edge and turn quality as opposed to only quickness. This new move culminates the training of body control, use of edges and the turns learned in the prior moves tests, and demonstrates them this time at a senior test level of performance. |
